I’m Zach D Roberts (support my work and this podcast) and this is the 5th episode of the InsurgencyUSA podcast – now for Visu.news. Joining me after the headlines is journalist and my new cohost, Aaron Cynic

This week I talk with Aaron Cynic (support his work) about the end of the Gothamist network of sites, Net Neutrality and much more.

As I record this we’re 307 days into the Trump administration. Like any week in the past year there’s a lot of news stories breaking – here’s a few that I think you need to read.

1 – ArsTechnica’s JON BRODKIN writes that our comments to the FCC on net neutrality don’t mean shit to the FCC’s Chairman.

Net neutrality rules are popular with Americans who use the Internet. When the Federal Communications Commission deliberated on possible net neutrality rules in 2014 and 2015, millions of comments poured in to support strict regulation of Internet service providers.

Public opinion helped push the FCC to adopt rules that prevent ISPs from blocking or throttling Internet content and from charging websites or other online services for priority treatment on the network.

Public opinion hasn’t changed much in the two-plus years that the rules have been on the books. The cable lobby surveyed registered voters this year and found that most of them continue to support bans on blocking, throttling, and paid prioritization. Multiple polls have found that net neutrality rules are popular with both Democratic and Republican voters.

2 – The Baltimore Sun’s Justin Fenton reports on the lock down of a neighborhood after a suspicious shooting of a police officer. That cop was scheduled to testify against his fellow officers in federal court.

Slain Baltimore homicide Detective Sean Suiter was scheduled to testify before a federal grand jury in the case against a squad of indicted officers on the day after he was shot, Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said Wednesday evening.

The revelation brings together two cases that have sent shock waves through the Police Department and the city as a whole: the federal prosecutions of eight members of the department’s elite gun task force, who are accused of shaking down citizens and conspiring with drug dealers, and the killing of Suiter last week in West Baltimore, the first of an on-duty officer by a suspect in 10 years.

3 – The Guardian’s Owen Bowcott and Julian Borger reports that the Butcher of Bosnia. Ratko Mladić has finally been sentenced to to life in jail for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladić, nicknamed the ‘butcher of Bosnia’, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

More than 20 years after the Srebrenica massacre, Mladic was found guilty at the United Nations-backed international criminal tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague of 10 offences involving extermination, murder and persecution of civilian populations.
